Milu in Motion: Blurring Borders, Building Communityes here:
DJ Milu is redefining what it means to be a DJ and curator in today’s ever-evolving creative scene. At just 25, this East African native, raised in Irvine and Rialto, California, has already made waves across the LA music landscape with her own distinctive style. Growing up, Milu was immersed in a tapestry of sounds ranging from the traditional music of her Eritrean heritage and iconic African artists to the legacy sounds shaped by African Americans that have defined Western music. “I have a very versatile taste in music, and that definitely comes from my dad,” she recalls, a sentiment that laid the foundation for her lifelong love affair with music.
Her journey into DJing wasn’t just about playing tracks; it was about creating a journey and telling a story through her selection. The moment she discovered Amapiano, Milu was hooked, not only by the sound but by the craft of DJing itself. Determined to connect with people through music, she embraced the art of reading a room while also incorporating her own taste and giving the audience what they didn’t know they needed. “I want to cater to as many people and audiences as possible,” she explains, a philosophy that has allowed her to blend familiar tunes with unexpected twists, ensuring each performance is as dynamic as the last.
Taking her first bold step at Vuuka in downtown LA, Milu didn’t wait for permission or a perfectly polished set. She simply introduced herself and said, “Hey, I DJ. Let’s make something happen.” That moment marked the beginning of a journey defined by courage and relentless experimentation. She spends countless hours digging through music libraries, honing transitions, and fine-tuning her sound in an effort to be excellent in her craft and challenge herself to grow technically and intuitively as a DJ. Like many emerging artists, she’s battled with perfectionism and self doubt but has come to learn that true artistry lies in embracing the imperfect moments just as much as the perfect ones. Creating mixes just for the fun of it, with mistakes and all, gave her the confidence to see that imperfections were simply part of the creative process and that at times, the best moments come when we least expect them.
Milu’s vision extends well beyond the DJ booth. Recognizing that music is just one facet of a broader cultural conversation, she has embraced the role of curator. With a deep belief in the power of connecting communities, she launched INVISION, a monthly event series that brings together diverse creative talents from comedians to painters and blends their performances with DJ sets catering to different genres. “I wanted to create something different where people could meet, connect, and experience great music under one understanding; we’re all here to support each other’s creative endeavors and contribute more positive energy to this world by lifting each other up,” Milu says, capturing the essence of her innovative approach.
Through her seamless fusion of sounds and experiences, Milu is not just setting trends, she’s building a community that thrives on collaboration and creativity. Her story is a reminder that the boundaries between DJing, curating, and event organizing are not fixed; they’re meant to be blurred in the pursuit of something truly original. With every set, every event, and every connection, Milu is proving that when you share your unique perspective with the world, you inspire others to do the same. As she continues to push the envelope in the LA music scene and beyond, it’s clear that this is only the beginning of a journey that will leave an indelible mark on the world of music and culture.
